How long the bookmark has been in his dusty Bible the
young man didn’t know.
"This Book will keep you from sin or sin will keep you
from this book" printed on one side. On the reverse,
handwritten "To my son, on his 16th birthday".
"When did father put this here, years ago?" he wondered.
Can parents do anything when our children leave home,
when we can no longer supervise their church attendance
and spiritual growth?
Will everything we have done prepare and defend them
against the seductive world?
Will they continue their walk closely with Jesus?
No experience of parenting is complete until we
experience that anguish of losing control over the
children.
Jesus struggled with the same questions the last night
he spent with his disciples.
What could He do other than pray for them? And what did
Jesus ask for?
My prayer is not that you take them out of the world
but that you protect them from the evil one. They are
not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them
by the truth; your word is truth. John 17:15-17 (NIV)
"O, Lord! Protect my child from the evil one. Make them
holy with your Word even when I am no longer around to
protect them."
Where did God promise that He answers prayers of parents
like this? In my Bible!
