"Innocent of the Blood of All Men"
Acts 20:26

Many have heard the story of the evangelist D.L. Moody who was being severely criticized by a certain woman for his methods of evangelism in attempting to win people to faith in Jesus Christ.

Moody replied, "I agree with you. I don't like the way I do it either. Tell me, ma'am, how do you do evangelism?" The woman replied, "Well, I don't." Moody then retorted, "Then I like my way of doing it better than your way of not doing it!"

In Acts 20, the Apostle Paul is giving a tearful farewell to his dear friends at Ephesus. A strong church was built there and a great work for Christ was underway. They had been through many things together, but now the Spirit told Paul that he was needed in Jerusalem. His words were difficult to bear as he said that they would never see his face anymore, for the Spirit had told him that he may soon go to prison.

As they exchanged their farewell greetings, Paul also said, "Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God."

God had forgiven Paul long before of his treachery to the church when, as a zealous opposer of Christ, he consented to the imprisonment and death of many believers. But this was not what Paul was talking about. For Paul had done everything he could to preach the Gospel to as many people as possible in every town, city, and village through which the Spirit had allowed him to pass.

People in those places came to know Christ and would no longer suffer the torment of hell, but experience heaven and a new life. Hence Paul could say in good faith, "I am innocent of the blood of all men."

I wonder how many of us could utter those same words with the same confidence that Paul had.
May we do all that we can to be obedient to the leadership of the Holy Spirit to tell someone about Jesus, and we will have a blessed day!
