“Wouldn’t it be great if he could serve? How wonderful it will be if she could get involved? They have talents and personality, not to mention the kind of money they got. They could do so much!” I know I am not the only one in church who has entertained such thoughts. “The sad thing is there is a lack of willingness to commit!” The disciples were quite “disappointed” when Jesus “discouraged” a perfect candidate who could have been a great follower and a contributor to His ministry.
Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Matt 19:21-22 (NIV)
Is not everything we have gifts from God? Why did Jesus make it so hard for this young man? Apparently, Jesus was looking for people who think less about the gifts and more about the Giver.
It is good to know that God uses believers who are willing to commit rather than those who are more qualified, more talented and successful.
What stands in the way of my commitment to following Jesus and serving in church? Is it the gifts God has given me or is the price of commitment too high?
